Key Players to Watch
Charlotte Hornets
Brandon Miller is one of the most important players to watch for Charlotte. He averaged 20.2 points, 4.9 rebounds and 3.3 assists per game during the 2025-26 season. He also scored 29 points against Philadelphia in the March 28 meeting.
Charlotte’s roster has also undergone significant changes entering the new season. LaMelo Ball was traded to Minnesota in June 2026, making the Hornets’ offensive structure different from the one Philadelphia faced during much of the previous season.
That makes the 2026-27 matchup more than a simple rematch. Charlotte will be trying to establish a new identity around its young core.
Philadelphia 76ers
Tyrese Maxey remains an important offensive player for Philadelphia. The Sixers’ official player profile notes that he has averaged 20.7 points and 4.7 assists over the first 358 games of his career. He also earned an All-Star starting spot in 2026.
Joel Embiid remains another major matchup factor. The former MVP averaged 26.6 points, 7.5 rebounds and 3.9 assists during the first half of the 2025-26 season, according to his official 76ers profile.
Philadelphia’s 2026-27 roster also includes major names such as Jaylen Brown, LeBron James, Kentavious Caldwell-Pope and Anfernee Simons, giving the team a substantially different look entering the new campaign.
Playoff History
The Hornets and 76ers have met only once in the NBA playoffs.
That series came in the 2000 Eastern Conference first round, when Philadelphia defeated Charlotte 3-1. Allen Iverson led the 76ers, while Charlotte featured players such as Baron Davis. Philadelphia advanced after winning three of the four games.
That playoff meeting remains the only postseason series between the two franchises, so most of their rivalry has developed through regular-season games.
Which Team Has the Historical Edge?
Philadelphia has the stronger historical record.
The 76ers lead the regular-season series 69-61 and also own the only playoff-series victory between the franchises. More recently, Philadelphia went 2-1 against Charlotte during the 2025-26 season.
However, the most recent season also showed why this matchup cannot be judged only by historical records. Charlotte won the January meeting by 37 points, while Philadelphia won the other two games by four and four points. The results suggest that individual games can be decided by very different factors, including shooting, turnovers, rebounding and late-game execution.
